Use of Rights

Ed Hillary IP Ltd

The name Sir Edmund Hillary carries global meaning. Every use of that name, image, or story is stewarded by Ed Hillary IP Ltd on behalf of the Hillary family, to ensure it continues to reflect the values it was built on — determination, generosity, curiosity, camaraderie, and the courage to stand up for what matters.

This page sets out the terms under which the Hillary name, likeness, and intellectual property may be used.

Ownership

All trademarks, names, and intellectual property relating to Sir Edmund Hillary are registered in the name of Ed Hillary IP Ltd and remain its property. Prior use of the name – however longstanding — does not create renewal rights or moral precedent. Every use requires current, formal permission.

Applying for Use

Anyone wishing to use Ed Hillary intellectual property or naming rights must apply directly to Ed Hillary IP Ltd. Applications should include:

  • The specific Ed Hillary IP or naming right to be used
  • A detailed description of the intended purpose and extent of use — for example, an advertising campaign, book publication, or school award, along with the number of activations, frequency, and geographic scope
  • The proposed duration of use

Applications can be submitted through the contact form or email address on this site.

Fees and Contributions

Fees are assessed according to the nature of the proposed use:

  • Educational and philanthropic uses may incur a nominal processing fee
  • In certain cases, a donation to an appropriate Himalayan charity may be accepted in place of a fee
  • Commercial advertising and brand partnerships are assessed at market rates
  • Every proposal is evaluated individually, on alignment, integrity, and impact

Duration and Renewal

All permissions are time-limited. Unless otherwise agreed, the maximum duration of any grant of rights is one year. Continued or extended use requires a new application and acceptance of new conditions — permissions do not renew automatically.

Acknowledgement

Anyone granted rights of use must formally acknowledge that permission has been given by Ed Hillary IP Ltd, in a form agreed at the time of approval.

Use of Images

Commercial use of Sir Edmund Hillary’s image requires separate permission from Ed Hillary IP Ltd. A selection of images is available through:

  • The Hillary Archive at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland Museum
  • Everest expedition images from the Royal Geographical Society

Decisions

All decisions relating to applications rest with the managers of Ed Hillary IP Ltd.
